What is the Palmer Method?

Diagram of spine anatomy

The Palmer Method is based upon philosophical principles set forth by D. D. Palmer and his son B. J. Palmer. The treatment method was initially developed in the late 1800s and expanded further in the early part of the 20th century. One of its fundamental beliefs is that misalignment of the vertebrae, or subluxation, is a primary underlying risk factor in many illnesses or medical conditions.

This treatment method employs manual, or “hands-on,” adjustment of the misplaced vertebrae to provide relief from a wide variety of symptoms. Manipulation of the spine, along with other joints and soft-tissue manipulation, may be supplemented by massage therapy and recommended exercises as well as lifestyle, nutritional and other health-related counseling.
